The name “Polybius” originates from the Greek historian and scholar Polybius that was the inventor of the “Polybius Square”. The device was used for fractionating plaintext characters so that they can be represented by a smaller set of symbols, which is useful for cryptography. The device allows for the coded transmission of any message, provided both parties to the message hold the same Square.
